Process is suitable for continuous casting. Fe-, Cr-, Ni-, W- or Mo carbonyls are pref. used. Pref. Fe-, opt. mixed with Cr-, Ni-, W- or Mo carbonyl, is used for steel or Fe melts. Pref. carbonyl-charged gas is led intermittently to melt, partic. at foot of ingot mould, to ensure more even distribution of gases. Resulting ingots have fine grain-structure.
