Process for selectively hydrogenating an organic compound having at least one unsaturated group comprises contacting the compound with a hydrogen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst comprising an active material that is applied to a solid electrolyte which in turn is joined to a substrate so that a current flows through the electrolyte. The active material is maintained at a constant potential. During hydrogenation, a voltage is applied to the catalyst. Verfahren zur selektiven Hydrierung mindestens einer, mindestens eine ungesättigte Gruppe aufweisenden organischen Verbindung durch Inkontaktbringen der mindestens einen organischen Verbindung mit einem wasserstoffenthaltenden Gas in Gegenwart eines Katalysators, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Katalysator ein Aktivmaterial umfaßt, das auf einem Festelektrolyten aufgebracht ist, mit dem wiederum ein metallisches Substrat derart verbunden ist, daß durch den Festelektrolyten ein Strom fließt, so daß das Aktivmaterial auf einem konstanten Potential gehalten werden kann, und während der Hydrierung an den Katalysator eine Spannung angelegt wird.
