Water dilutable binder for preparing aqueous thixotropic paints useful for coating plastics, contains rheological control agent based on chlorinated olefin

The binder contains a rheological control agent based on a chlorinated olefin. A water dilutable binder, for the preparation of aqueous thixotropic paints, contains a rheological control agent based on chlorinated olefin. Preparation of the RCA involves free radical polymerization of: (A) 20-90 wt.% of (wt.%) of a mixture of: (a1) acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or a mixture of these (3-50); and (a2) ethylenically unsaturated monomers different from (a1) or a mixture of these (50-97); in the presence of (B) a chlorine containing polyolefin of Cl content 1-50 wt.% relative to the polyolefin; and (C) a free radical former or a mixture of formers. After neutralization of at least 20% of its carboxyl groups the polymerisation product is dispersed in water, so that the sum of the wt.% contents of components (A), (B),(C), (a1) and (a2) is 100 wt.%. The composition of the mixture of (a1) and (a2) is so selected that on exclusive polymerization the mixture of (a1) and (a2) contains a polymerizate having a glass transition temperature of 0-150 deg C, 0.04-1.0 milliequivalents of one or more of the functional groups: COOH, -OH, -NR3, -CN, -CONH2, -CO-, NHCONH-, -OCONH-, OPO3H, -OSO3H, -R-O-R- (where R = an organic residue) and can be substituted by 0-50 wt.% of one or more of the following cycloaliphatic groups having at least one 1-12C alkyl group: cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl, perhydronaphthyl, perhydroanthracyl, perhydrophenanthryl, adamantyl, isobornyl, bicyclohexyl, bicycloheptyl, bicyclooctyl, bicyclononyl, bicyclodecyl, bicycloundecyl or bicyclododecyl. Independent claims are also included for: (1) aqueous paints containing at least one water dilutable binder as above; and (2) a process for priming or single layer coating of plastics bases, e.g. polypropylene bases, in which the aqueous paint is applied to the base.
