Zusammenfassung:	The apparatus has a gear selecting/shifting element (160) that is moved between at least two change-speed positions by an actuator (100) that has at least one, and preferably two, fluid filled chamber(s) (110,111). A control unit (130) sends signals to valves (118,123) which increase or decrease the volume of liquid in the chambers so as to effect a change on the position of the gear selecting element. The actuator has a composite spring arrangement (104,105) within it which tends to bias the diaphragm to a central position, that corresponds to a particular ratio or set of ratios.
