A fixed given value does not serve as a change-over criterion of the braking means pump, rather, a value which is determined according to a characteristic value (K) is used. In addition, the given standard characteristic curve for the relationship between the deceleration of the vehicle and a value which represents the pedal travel of the brake pedal are stored. A vehicle-specific comparison characteristic curve is established when the brake is actuated by assigning an obtained vehicle deceleration (aFzg) to a value (sMem) which represents the pedal travel of the brake pedal. The characteristic value (K) is then determined from the divergence established in this comparison.
