In the direct electrical heating of a glass melting unit, a d.c. component is superimposed on the a.c. used for melt heating by producing an additional voltage drop in one of the two a.c. components in a heating circuit including a transformer and two electrodes projecting into the glass melt. Preferred Features: The voltage drop is produced by splitting the heating a.c. into forward and backward current components and providing an additional resistance in one of the components or by phase section control.
