The detector includes an illumination device such as a stroboscope (20) for producing short light pulses. A CCD camera (18) optically detects characteristics of the fruit/vegetable (30). An evaluation unit (24) classifies the fruit/vegetable according to the detected characteristics. The fruit/vegetables are sorted in batches accordingly.
