Zusammenfassung:	The escalator has alternative operation with a light barrier or with a standby circuit. The escalator can be put back in the standby state after actuation of an emergency switch. The arrangement has a light box arrangement arranged to detect objects and/or people on a step. The standby circuit switches the escalator on in response to the output signal of the light box arrangement (26). The latter has a number of light boxes (26) extending at an angle to the drive direction (14) of the escalator. The escalator control (54) activates the standby circuit (48) and a switch on device (50) esp. a contact mat or a switch on light box. When this device is activated by a passenger the escalator is switched on by a drive motor (52).
