Fiber pen housing tapering to open front end with tip

When the protective cap is replaced to the rear of the pen, a pin inside the cap enters a bore and thus moves the pen forward out of its housing into its use position. When the cap is pulled off, a spring drives the pen inside back so far into its housing that the pen tip lies within the outer case.
