Zusammenfassung:Preparation of 2-alkylcarboxylic acids (I) comprises reacting a carboxylic ester (II) with dialkyl carbonate (III) in a hydrophobic solvent, alkaline hydrolysis and decarboxylation. Also claimed is the preparation of 2-alkylmalonic diesters (IV) by reacting (II) with (III) in a hydrophobic solvent. Preferably (II) has 3-30, especially 8-18 carbon (C) atoms in the acid group and 1-10, especially 1-4 C in the alcohol group. (III) has 1-16 C in the alcohol groups. An aromatic solvent is used. Reaction with (III) is carried out at 75-80 deg C in the presence of a base.
