Zusammenfassung: | 1,226,065. Resin-impregnated laminates. QUAKER OATS CO. 19 May, 1969 [31 May, 1968], No. 25518/69. Heading B5N. [Also in Division C3] An acid-curable laminate binder composition having a viscosity between 200 and 5000 c.p.s. at 77 F. comprises a homogeneous mixture of (A) a resin having a viscosity between 5000 and 200,000 c.p.s. prepared by condensing 1 mol. of furfuryl alcohol with 0À25-1 mol. of formaldehyde in the presence of an acid, neutralizing the acid and removing all the water of condensation, and (B) 5-25% of furfural. The resin (A) may be prepared from furfuryl alcohol and formalin in the presence of oxalic acid which is subsequently neutralized with triethanolamine. The acid curable binder may be mixed with an amino or vinyl silane and cured with p-toluene sulphonic acid or aqueous or methanolic phosphoric acid. Laminates are prepared by forming a gel coat of the binder on a polyester sheet, applying alternate layers of binder and glass fibre mats or glass cloths to this, rolling each mat into the layer of binder beneath it, stripping of the polyester sheet and curing the binder with heat. In Example 6 the glass fibre mat is pretreated with a silane. |
