According to the invention, part of the drained and clarified water (w) flows, by suction of flowing fraction (L) of sewage carried out by a first pump device (4) in a following chamber (2), back into the top section of the first chamber (1) through one or more openings (Ö). Further, biomass layer which continuously stems from bacteria beds is redirected to bacteria beds (3) by suction of the water layer existing below the bacteria beds (3) via a secon d pump device (7) from their top section and outside the stationary liquid. Pump devices (4, 7) are programmed to operate with interruptions.
