In difluoresceinyl-mercury compounds of Formalµ (Ia) or (Ib) (where R=H or halogen and R1-R5 = H, halogen, alkyl or HgX, where X is an anion) at least one of R and R1-R5 is radioactive iodine. The mercury atom need not be radioactive. The compounds may be prepared by reacting a suspension of the corresponding fluorescein derivative with a solution of an ionic bivalent mercury compound, e.g. mercuric acetate, whereby the mercury atom is substituted in two stages. The desired compound is separated by chromatography. The following compounds are disclosed, having labelling 125I, 131I, 125I203Hg, 125I197Hg, 131I203Hg or 131I197Hg: bis-41-(21,71-diiodofluoresceinyl) mercury, bis - 21 - (41,51- diiodofluoresceinyl) mercury and bis-(tetraiodofluoresceinyl) mercury. The chromatographic fractions can contain the pure compound or a mixture thereof with the hydroxymercuryfluorescein compound.
