Zusammenfassung:In a process for seam depth control during laser beam welding, especially of aluminium automobile body parts, the solid state laser optics and thus the beam incidence are inclined at a specific angle in the range 15-35 deg to the normal to the workpiece surface, the alignment of the optics being independent of the welding direction. Preferably, when laser beam welding steel (St 1403) components, a beam inclination of 25 deg is chosen at a laser power (P) of more than 1600 W and a focal diameter (df) of 0.8 mm.
