Zusammenfassung:	The lamp (12) may be a Xe metal halide discharge lamp with a high-voltage starter (30) whose output voltage and current are sampled (32) for application to the control logic (28). The power supplied to the lamp is varied by changes in the periodicity of a pulse-width modulator (38). The average power lies between a min. which is substantially below the lamp rating but ensures that it is not extinguished, and a max. which is above the rating during flashes of higher than nominal brilliance.
