1276519 Organometallic/noble metal catalyst OLIN CORP 21 Nov 1969 [21 Nov 1968] 57067/69 Heading B1E [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] A catalyst comprises either a mixture or a complex of (a) at least one aryl halo compound of formula R m MX n wherein R is C 6 -C 12 aryl, M is an element of Groups IIb, IIIb or IVb and having a valency v, X is Cl, Br or I, m and n are 1 or 2 and m+n=v, with (b) at least one noble metal halide or oxide. Specified noble metals are Ru, Re, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt, Ag and Au. Elements specified for "M" are Zn, Cd, Mg, B, Al, Ga, In, Th, Si, Ge, Sn and Pb. The catalyst may also contain one or more oxides of Fe, Cr, Mo, Nb, Ta, W and V. The preferred ratio of aryl halo compound to noble metal compound is between 0.1 to 10. The catalyst may be self-supported or deposited on a carrier, those specified being alumina, silica, carbon, barium, sulphate, calcium carbonate, asbestos, bentonite, diatomaceous earth and fullers earth. Examples are given for catalysts comprising PdCL 2 with Ph 2 PbCl 2 , Ph 2 SiCl 2 Ph 2 GeCl 2 , PhBCl 2 , and PhMgCl, and RhCl 3 with Ph 2 PbCl 2 , Ph 2 GeCl 2 , and PhBCl 2 .
