Zusammenfassung:	A permanent magnet starting motor has the rotating motor force transmitted to a pinion of a geared coupling. The coupling is smoothly engaged with the motor shaft by a helical spline and a component to prevent rotation is located at the outer peripheral section of the coupling. This component is positively actuated by a solenoid which is controlled by an external circuit. This component is overlapped in the axial direction so as to have an axial length that is less than the axial movement of the coupling. The solenoid is mounted concentrically about the motor shaft. There are two of the above-mentioned components, each being semi-cylindrical and concentric with the coupling.
