Zusammenfassung:Nitrobenzene which has been chlorinated two or a plurality of times and in which at least one chlorine atom is adjacent the nitro group is reacted with excess hydrazine in an alkaline reaction medium to form chlorine-substituted 1-hydroxy-benzotriazole sodium salt and is dechlorinated with H2 or an H2-developing substance on a noble metal hydrogenation catalyst. After acidification, free 1-hydroxy-benzotriazole which no longer contains chlorine is obtained.
