Zusammenfassung:	Treatment of (materials contg.) asbestos fibres comprises coating with a liquid contg. esters and/or incompletely hydrolysable esters. Also claimed are the treated fibres per se. The esters contain (OR) gps. or organic gps. (R'), e.g. alkyl or aryl gps., which may have functional substituents. The coating compsn. esp. is based on SiO2 sols and/or organic modified SiO2 sols prepd. from cpds. of the formula R'nSi(OR)4-n, in which, esp., n = 1 and R' = -CH3. The system esp. undergoes polycondensation or polymerisation to a firmly adhering, flexible coating with a dry thickness of >= 1 mu m, so that the fibres no longer damage the lungs.
