Also provided are front side (1) and backside (5) polarisers about the liquid crystal cell. A predetermined distance (3) exists between the front side polariser and the LC cell. Direct perceived light from a viewer passes only once in the same course to the cell via the front side polariser. Thus light passes to the viewer via one of two routes, one route involving environment light passing via the polariser and back again to the viewer via the LC cell, back polariser, reflector, back polariser and the LC cell. The other route involves light passing from the internal source to the viewer via the LC cell, back polariser, reflector, back polariser, LC cell and front side polariser. |
