The invention comprises basic mono- and disazo dyes, free from acidic water-solubilizing groups, of formula wherein Y is an aliphatic chain which may be interrupted by a hetero atom, A is a primary or secondary amino group, B is H, alkyl, alkoxy or aryl, Z is an amino, hydrazino or etherified hydroxylamino group in which groups the O and N atoms may be members of a heterocyclic ring and which groups may also be quaternized, and D 1 is the residue of a diazo component which may contain a further azo group. The dyes are prepared by (a) condensing an azo dye of the above formula, but wherein Y carries a group capable of reaction with an amine &c., with an amine, hydrazine or etherified hydroxylamine; (b) azo coupling using appropriate components; (c) quaternization of appropriate azo dyes and (d) oxidative coupling using a hydrazone D 1 =N.NH 2 and an appropriate 5-aminopyrazole to give the dyes having an N atom in D adjacent to the ring C atom to which the -N=N- group is linked. The dyes may be used to colour synthetic, in particular polyacrylonitrile, fibres in yellow, orange and red shades. |
