[Also in Division A4] An apparatus for treating food and other materials comprises a treating chamber 2, a coil of tubing 4 wound about horizontal axis 24, means 6, 7, 8 for rotating the coil about the axis, one end of the coil communicating with a feeding station and the other end with the treating chamber, and means 15, 16 for delivering a liquid and the material to be treated to the feeding station for conveyance by the coil into the treating chamber, which may be operated at super or sub atmospheric pressure. The heated material may be removed from the chamber by a second coil 25. Processes referred to include sterilization of cans or other packages, using a liquid water, glycol, glycerine, and silicone or hydrocarbon oils, blanching, cooking potatoes using oil or fats, impregnation of fruit slices with syrups or other liquids containing sweeteners, flavourings or preservatives, degassing foods prior to packaging, impregnating beans, cereals and other foods with preservatives or tenderising agents.
