Polymerizable adhesive compositions, particularly useful as anaerobic adhesives, comprise. an ester of acrylic or. α-substituted acrylic acid, a, peroxy initiator, and an organic bonding accelerator containing a condensation product of an aldehyde and a primary or secondary amine. The bonding accelerator preferably also; includes, as a reducing activator, a sulphurcontaining free radical accelerator or a. compound containing an oxidizable transition metal. The compositions are suitably stored as a multipart system in which the bonding accelerator is kept separate from the other components. The polymerizable ester may be an acrylate, alkacrylate or haloacrylate containing two.or more such ester groups, e.g. polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate or reaction product of an active acrylic ester and a polyisocyanate, or may. be a monoester containing a potentially cross-linkable group, e.g. furfuryl methacrylate, cyclohexyl. acrylate, isobutyl methacrylate, hydroxyethyl or hydroxypropyl methacrylate, cyanoethyl acrylate, t-butylaminoethyl methacrylate, dimethyl aminoethyl. methacrylate or glycidyl methacrylate. The peroxy initiator is preferably a hydroperoxide such as cumene hydroperoxide; others such. as t-butyl perbenzoate, t-butyl isopropyl carbonate and lauroyl peroxide can also be used. Exemplified condensation products are butyraldehyde aniline, butyraldehyde - butylamine, hydrocinnamic aldehyde - butylamine; and exemplified as reducing activator are 2 - mercaptobenzothiazole, copper pentanedione, 1-allyl-2-thiourea, copper dimethyl dithio carbamate, cobalt pentane dione, iron pentanedione, cobalt naphthenate, iron naphthenate, dodecyl mercaptan, thiocarbanilide and N - oxydiethylene-benzothiazole-2-sulphonamide
