An acrylonitrile copolymer comprises units derived from acrylonitrile, 1 to 15% of methyl or ethyl acrylate or methacrylate and 0.05 to 1.5% of diacetonacrylamide. The copolymer may be prepared in aqueous dispersion or emulsion in the presence of a persulphatebisulphite or nitrite-metabisulphate catalyst composition. The process can be carried out continuously if desired. The copolymer may be dyed and is suitable for spinning.
