Silver halide emulsions are panchromatically sensitized with at least two compounds of formula (I) and a single dye of formula (II): in which R 1 , R 3 , R 4 and R 6 are each C 1-4 alkyl, carboxyalkyl, sulphoalkyl or sulphoalkoxyalkyl, at least one (in at least one of the compounds) being other than alkyl; R 2 is H or C 1- 4 alkyl; R 5 is C 1-4 alkyl; Y 1 is H, Cl or C 1-4 alkyl or alkoxy; Y 2 is H or C 1-4 alkyl and is CH 3 when Y 1 is Cl; each Z completes a heterocyclic nucleus; X is an anion; and n, m and p are each 1 or 2. Preferred emulsions contain 2 or 3 compounds of formula (I) and together with the compound of formula (II) provide a supersensitizing effect. Z may complete a thiazoline, benzothiazole or benzoselenazole ring.
