Novel esters of formula wherein A is straight or branched alkylene, and R and R1 are each H, alkyl or aralkyl or together with the adjacent N form a monocyclic saturated heterocyclic radical, and acid addition salts, are prepared either by esterification of the acid chloride or ethyl ester with an alcohol of formula HO-A-N.R.R1, or by reaction of 4- benzyl-piperidine with a haloformate of formula X-COOA-Z where X is halogen and Z is halogen or -NRR1, followed where Z is halogen by reaction of the product with the amine HNRR1 and in both cases optionally followed by salt formation. 1 - Chloro - 2 - propyl 4 - benzylpiperidine - 1- carboxylate is prepared by reaction of 4-benzylpiperidine with 1-chloroisopropyl chloroformate. Pharmaceutical compositions in conventional forms for oral, rectal and parenteral administration comprise an above novel compound and a carrier or coating and are used in the treatment of disturbances of cardiac rhythm.
