Heading C2C. α-Oximinoketones of the formula in which R and R1 are an alkyl or alkenyl radical which may be substituted by an aryl or substituted aryl radical and R may also be a hydrogen atom or an aryl or substituted aryl radical, or R1 is an optionally substituted aryl radical and R is an aryl or substituted aryl radical or an alkyl or alkenyl radical substituted by an aryl or substituted aryl radical, or R1 together with R and represent a 6-membered hydrocarbon ring fused to an optionally substituted aromatic ring, are prepared by reacting a ketone of the formula in solution in an inert organic solvent immiscible with water and in the presence of a hydrogen halide or donor thereof, with a quantity of alkyl nitrite insufficient for complete nitrosation, extracting the reaction mixture with an aqueous alkaline solution, and, optionally after replenishing the ketone used, alternately incompletely nitrosating and extracting the extracted mixture, and optionally isolating the α-oximinoketone or its salt from the aqueousalkaline extracts. An apparatus is described in which the process may be carried out.
