A knit-set-deknit crimped yarn is opened by withdrawing the yarn from a knitted fabric 1, passing through a relaxation zone 5 under a tension of less than 0.05 g/d and thereafter applying a frictional force to the yarn in its relaxed state to displace the filaments relative to one another thereby to open the yarn. The relaxation zone extends between a roller 4 for withdrawing the yarn from the fabric and the device 6 for applying the frictional force to the fabric. The peripheral speed of the withdrawal roller 4 is higher than that of the yarn to cause the roller to slip with respect to the yarn. As shown, the device 6 comprises an agate knife edge 7. Alternatively, the device 6 can comprise two parts resiliently pressed together or an aerofoil-shaped ceramic pin. After passing the friction device 6 the yarn can be advanced at a tension of at least 0.1 g/d. The yarn can be entangled and interlaced by a fluid. This treatment may decrease the bulkiness of the yarn.
