A device for cleaning a moving web comprises a corona discharge device 13 for depositing charges of a given polarity on one side of the web and a backing electrode 16 which is connected to a D.C. source so that it is charged at the same polarity as the device 13 so as to repel particles on the web, which particles are removed by a current of air 23 The charges on the web are neutralized by corona discharge devices 19, 20. In a modification the electrode 16 is replaced by an electrically charged roller which carries the web.
