A microtome specimen stage comprises a cylindrical heat conductive block 20 connected to a heat sink 10 by a thermo electric cooling module 18 to maintain the support surface of block 20 at freezing temperature, the upper surface of the block 20 being adapted to support a specimen, and a tubular element 60 surrounding the block 20 and movable axially thereof, the element 60 having a radially outwardly extending flange 64 which defines a cutting plane 90 for the microtome knife, successive specimen slices being cut with incremental movement of the element 60 relative to the block 20 until the cutting plane 90 is level with the support surface of the block 20. The element 60 is externally screw-threaded and engages with an internally screw-threaded tubular element 50 which is fixed with respect to the block 20. Axial movement of the element 60 is effected by screwing it into or out of the element 50. The incremental movement of the element 60 is determined by the pitch of the screw-threds and by a clip-stop arrangement in which a spring biased plunger 74 housed in the block 20 is adapted to engage either of two vertical grooves 82 provided in the inner wall of the element 60.
