[Also in Division A5] The invention relates to penicillins of formula wherein R1 is phenyl, halogen-substituted phenyl, alkyl-substituted phenyl, amino-substituted phenyl, or cycloalkyl; R2 is halogen or C 1-5 alkyl; R3 is hydrogen or C 1-5 alkyl; and salts thereof. Typical compounds are 1 - phenyl - 3 - methyl - 4 - bromo - 5 - pyrazolyl penicillin, 1 - (p - bromophenyl) - 3 - methyl - bromo - 5 - pyrazolyl penicillin and 1 - cyclohexyl - 4 - methyl - 5 - pyrazolyl penicillin. The penicillins are prepared by reacting 6-aminopenicillanic acid or a salt thereof, with an acid of formula or a functional derivative thereof, wherein R1, R2 and R3 have the above meanings. Salts are formed with organic and inorganic bases. The penicillins are effective against penicillinresistant strains of bacteria and may be administered with other drugs (see Division A5).
