[Also in Division C3] Alkyd resin paints are rendered thixotropic by incorporating 1 to 30 wt. % of a polyurethane having 2 to 20 urethane groups derived from a diisocyanate and a diol and optionally up to 5 wt. % of a monoisocyanate or monoalcohol. Numerous conventional polyurethane and alkyd resin forming reactants are mentioned. In Examples polyurethanes prepared from triisopropylbenzene diisocyanate and octadecane-1,12-diol or octa-9,10-decane-1,12- diol are used with various oil modified alkyds. Other ingredients present in the paints are various hydrocarbon, alcohol, ester and ether solvents, urea- or melamine-formaldehyde resin, aluminium powder paste pigment, metal driers and silicone oil. In Example 2 a solution of p-toluenesulphonic acid as curing catalyst is incorporated shortly before use. They are sprayed onto vertical substrates at 80 to 200 g/m2 and stored (30 minutes at 140 to 160‹C) without running and successive coatings may be applied to achieve greater thickness. General reference is made to application by brushing or rollers. Specified substrates are ships, bridges and iron constructions in general. The paints are stated to be particularly useful for hammered metal effect lacquers. .
