[Also in Division C5] Hydrocarbyl trisulphides having the formula wherein each of R 1 to R 6 is a hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl radical, are prepared by reaction in the presence of a basic catalyst, a mercaptan having the formula with sulphur, or with one or more polysulphides having the formula wherein Y is an integer greater than 3, using more than one gram mole of mercaptan per gram atom of sulphur or per (Y - 3) gram moles of polysulphide, or when a mixture of polysulphides is used, more than one gram mole of mercaptan per (x - 3) gram moles of the mixture, where x is the average number of S atoms per molecule. Alternatively tert. alkyl trisulphide polymers may be prepared by the process by using as the mercaptan a poly (tert. alkyl) polythiol. The basic catalyst is preferably an amine.
