In a method of cleaning and cooling a grinding wheel 1 during the grinding of a workpiece, fluid is accelerated to a high kinetic energy and directed by nozzles, e.g. 6, 7, 8 in a direction substantially perpendicular to the grinding surface of the grinding wheel and is applied to a part of the surface which is out of contact with the workpiece during grinding. A device 2 described for use in carrying out the method, straddles the circumference of the wheel 1 and includes three sets of nozzles 6, 7, 8. The nozzles may be conical or flat and may be designed to convert the fluid into a mist or fog before it strikes the wheel surface. The nozzles are preferably at most 2 mm. in diameter, e.g. 1 mm. and their maximum spacing is less than ten times the orifice diameter. A plurality of the devices 2 may be located about a single wheel and each may have a deflector 13, Fig. 3, which removes air layers carried along by the rotating wheel. These layers may also be removed by a vacuum device. The fluid may be an emulsion or suspension of oil in water. In another embodiment the fluid is applied by means of a nozzle which discharges a pressurized gas having a high velocity and carrying along a liquid in the form of droplets or in an atomized condition. In this case the outlets for the gas and liquid may be concentric. |
