A solution of cis-1,4-polyisoprene in a hydrocarbon solvent containing an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, the carboxyl group of which is attached to a tertiary or quaternary carbon atom, is contacted with an aqueous medium at elevated temperature, and the resulting acidcontaining rubbery mass is separated. The acid may be present in an amount of 0À5 to 5 parts per 100 parts by weight of rubber. The rubber may then be mixed with carbon black and other compounding ingredients.
