In a hot gas engine comprising a power control device which can withdraw working medium from a supply working medium to the working space, the piston like body 50 which varies the volume of the expansion space 8 is provided on the side facing this space with a heat insulating piston cap 51 which is solid or has imperforate walls of sufficient strength to withstand the forces exerted on them by the pressure in the working space. The piston cap is manufactured from an opaque vitreous material or a sintered metal or sintered ceramic material having a specific gravity and a thermal conductivity which are low relative to the specific gravities and thermal conductivities of non sintered metals having the same or higher melting temperatures.
