[Also in Divisions C5, C6 and D1] Novel phenyl-benzoxazolyl-stilbenes, for use as brightening agents, are of the formula wherein X is a free sulphonic acid group or a water-soluble salt thereof, or a sulphonamide group and Y is a free carboxyl group or a watersoluble salt thereof, and are prepared by condensing a stilbene dicarboxylic acid semi-ester, or a derivative of the free carboxyl group, with a 2-amino-4-phenylphenol (an example utilizes the ethyl semi-ester and the resulting benzoxazole intermediate is described) followed by treatment of the resulting benzoxazole with a sulphonating agent or a chlorosulphonating agent followed by hydrolysis or possibly amination.
