Lubricant compositions comprise a mineral lubricating oil and a sulphonamide which is a reaction product of one or more mols. of an alkyl aryl sulphonyl halide with an amine of formula H2N-X, where X is an amino-hydrocarbon group containing at least 2 carbon atoms and at least one primary, secondary or tertiary nitrogen atom, wherein any two nitrogen atoms are separated by at least 2 carbon atoms and the number of alkyl aryl sulphonyl residues in the sulphonamide molecule is not greater than the total number of primary and secondary nitrogen atoms in the amine, the sulphonamide being present in a proportion not exceeding its solubility limit. Amines specified are ethylene and propylene diamine, diethylene and dipropylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, N-(2-amino ethyl) piperazine and N,N-dimethyl 1,3-propylene diamine. The composition may include zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate.
