Zusammenfassung: | The invention relates to a preparation of beta-halogeno ethers of the general formula wherein R1, R2 and R3 each are a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, alkaryl, or cycloalkyl group, optionally substituted (R2 and R3 may belong with the two carbon atoms linking them to the same cycloaliphatic ring); R4 is an alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, or cycloalkyl group, optionally substituted; and X is chlorine, bromine, or iodine, by treating an olefin of the formula R1R2C = CH R3 with an alcohol or phenol of the formula R4OH and with the halogen X in the presence of an ion-exchange resin in its hydroxy form. Preferably R4 is a methyl, ethyl, tert. butyl or phenyl group, R1 is a hydrogen atom, R2 is methyl, phenyl group and R3 is a hydrogen atom. In an example alphamethoxy-beta-chloroethyl benzene is obtained by treating styrene and methanol with chlorine in the presence of an anion exchange resin. Many other examples are given. |
