Effluent gas from such processes as enamelling are passed over a platinum group catalyst supported on a unitary porous refractory structure having gas flow channels therethrough and macropores communicating with the channels. The catalyst may be coated on to a refractory metal oxide on the surfaces and macropores of the support. Fumes drawn by a blower 16 from an enamelling kiln 14 are passed through channels 9 in a porous refractory structure, after preheating by burners 24. The organic vehicle vapours burn in the presence of the catalyst in the channels 9, and the combustion products are passed to a heat exchanger 18 providing hot air for drying the enamel in the kiln 14.
