In character recognition apparatus, the character is sampled during relative horizontal movement between the character and a vertical column of photo-cells when a clock-driven cylic counter passes through zero, the counter being incremented at a given frequency between the leading and trailing edges of the first vertical stroke of the character and at twice that frequency thereafter. The thickness of the first vertical stroke equals the distance between sampling points, the first sampling point being at the centre of this stroke (but is not indicated by the counter).
