Apparatus for processing punch cards or the like comprises a reader having an inlet 6, Figs. 1 and 2, for receiving the cards, and automatic means for feeding the cards to the inlet, the card-discharging portion of the feeding means being movable between a normal operative position in registry with the inlet, as shown in Fig. 1, and a second inoperative position as shown in Fig. 2, wherein the inlet is left free for the admission of cards other than through said card-discharging portion. The input means comprises a receptacle 1, Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, movable between its two positions by a handgrip member 31 and guided by a pin 35 and a slot 28 in a bracket 27 secured to the receptacle, engaging respectively a slot 34 and a pin 29 in or on a housing 11, a spring 30 counteracting the weight of the receptacle. In the inoperative position, Fig. 2, the member 31 acts as a guide for inserted cards. The receptacle 1 contains a stack of cards 2 pressed down by a plate 14 and rollers 15, which can be lifted to relieve the pressure through a pawl and ratchet 21, 20 by energizing an electromagnet 22. Cards are separated in turn from the bottom of the stack by a friction roller 12 continuously rotated by an electric motor 8 and projecting through a cut-out 13 in the bottom wall 4 of the receptacle. The height of the outlet from the receptacle is adjustable by a gate 24.
