Zusammenfassung: | A coated article comprises a core, an exterior coating of pyrolytic carbon, and a less dense coating of pyrolytic carbon between the core and the exterior coating. Nuclear fuel is made by mixing the oxides of uranium and thorium with a binder (methyl ethyl ketone and camphor), forming into particles, fluidizing with argon, and treating at 1300 DEG C. with propane to form the inner coating. The outer denser coating is formed at 1700 DEG C. or above using methane. Reference is also made to coating nuclear fuel carbide particles. When the fuel comprises mixed oxides, the inner coating may alternatively be a nitride, oxide, carbide, or metal. |
