A battery charging rectifier comprises a transformer 14 in series with a constant current type transductor 20 the central windings 23 of which is energized from the battery terminals 10, 11. A circuit comprising transistors 33, 39 and a reference Zener diode 30 energizes a relay 30, 32a to break the A.C. circuit when the battery voltage exceeds a determined value, the ratio of off to on periods increasing with battery voltage. A relay 25, 25a breaks the battery circuit when the supply is disconnected and another relay 46, 46a breaks the supply circuit to prevent cycling when a battery is not connected.
