The composite lever system of the parent Specification is modified to comprise an adjuster lever 68 which is mounted on the shoe 28 on a pivot 70 which normally allows the adjuster lever to pivot to adjust the strut 46 but, when the braking force exceeds a predetermined value, avoids overstressing the system by translational movement in the slot 72 of the shoe web against the resilient bias 38 of a second lever 90 pivotally mounted on the shoe 28 and forming part of the composite lever system. The lever 90 has a tab 92 extending into a slotted opening in the web of the shoe 28 and has a tab 100 which engages the edge of the lever 68. In a modification the second lever is formed by a U-shaped resilient lever bearing on a pin fixed to the web of the shoe- 28 intermediate its ends and bearing at its ends respectively on the edge of the lever 68 and the shoe rim.
