The invention comprises the compounds 1-chloro - 3,3,3 - trifluoro - 2 - trifluoromethyl-propene and 1,3-dichloro-3,3-difluoro-2-trifluoromethylpropene; and a process for the halogenation of branched-chain hydrocarbons having up to 10 carbon atoms by reacting the hydrocarbon in the vapour phase at 200-650 DEG C. with HF and Cl2, Br2 or I2 in a reactor in the presence of elemental carbon, the residence time of the reactants in the reactor being from 0.1 to 200 seconds. Inert diluent gases can be present. The product is usually unsaturated, whether the starting material is saturated or ethylenically unsaturated. Chloro-fluoromethanes and cyclic compounds may also be obtained. In examples, isobutylene, HF and Cl2 give products whose main constituents are the compounds named above, 1,1,2-trichloro-trifluoropropene, and higher chlorinated products; and diisobutylene gives CF3Cl, CF2Cl2 and CFCl3.
