In an automatic multi spindle lathe having spindles 20 mounted in a spindle drum, a backmachining apparatus comprising an indexable turret 2 is provided enabling a workpiece to be picked-off from the lathe spindle 20 a indexed to back-machining stations II, III, IV. The apparatus comprises the indexable turret 2 mounted on a longitudinal slide 1, the said turret 2 being rotatable about an axis transverse to the direction of the slide 1 and at right angles to the lathe spindles 20. The turret has rotatable workpiece chucks driven by gearing 15 at a speed synchronised with the lathe spindle 20 and the chucks are automatically operated by abutment 6 when the turret 2 is moved along the slide 1 towards the spindle 20 by a pneumatic cylinder 5. In the embodiment described an electro-pneumatic drilling unit is carried at station II, and a tapping operation by means of a rotating and pneumatically fed tapping attachment 11, 12 is carried out at station III. A pneumatically operated chuck release and ejection device is provided at station IV. The turret 2 is indexed automatically by a cam 8 released locking pin 7 and a fixed rack 9 co-operating with a gear having a free wheel ratchet and pawl device. The apparatus may be used with hexagonal or square as well as round section workpieces. Individual movements may be controlled mechanically or hydraulically instead of pneumatically. |
