The heads H of a multi-disc memory are mounted in pairs of sets between adjacent discs 6, Fig. 4 (apart from single sets outside the endmost discs of the stack) by gimbal mountings, Fig. 5, from cantilever springs 54 fixed to reciprocable tubular supports 11, slidable over fixed rods (Fig. 1, not shown) arranged radially of the discs. Downward extensions of the springs 60 may be engaged by rockable bars 63 actuated by a solenoid via the link 78 connected to toggle means and the mutual linkages of Fig. 4 to hold the heads away from the discs until they have accelerated from rest sufficiently to support the heads in transducing relationship with the discs by air-cushioning. Each bar 63 lifts all the heads of one set and the bar 71 operated on all sets. When inoperative, Fig. 5, the bars 63 are sufficiently removed from the spring extensions to allow the heads to freely accommodate themselves to the discs.
