Electrolytic apparatus for simultaneously preparing chlorine and alkali metal carbonate comprises a vertical filter diaphragm 2, e.g. of asbestos or plastic such as P.V.C., between a cathode 4, e.g. a wire screen or perforated sheet, and an anode 1, e.g. of graphite, but separated from the active surface of the cathode, e.g. by fixing the diaphragm to an auxiliary screen of insulating material 3, Fig. 1, or to an auxiliary metal screen provided with an insulating and corrosion resistant coating, with CO2 being admitted from the bottom into the catholyte for direct carbonation. Alternatively the asbestos diaphragm 2 may be sucked on to the cathode 4, Fig. 2, provided with an insulating coating 5 on the surface facing the anode 1.
