In a pneumatic tyre comprising a carcase of superposed cross-laid parallel cord plies 1a, 1b, 1c, 1d a layer 4b, 4c or 4d of rubber or the like is interposed between at least one pair of adjacent plies to extend beneath the tread 2 of the tyre and over a width not substantially greater than that of the tread, the layer being flexible but having a modulus of elasticity greater than that of the rubber of the carcase and tread and not lower than 350 g/mm.2 at 100% elongation. Such a layer may be interposed between all the carcase plies as at 4b, 4c and 4d, and additionally a layer 4a, 4e may be disposed respectively below and above the carcase plies. The layer may be of natural or synthetic rubber and have a thickness of between 0.3 mm. and 2 mm. A tyre incorporating such carcase ply inserts may dispense with any rigid tread reinforcement, but may incorporate a protective breaker structure.
